I. A. Richards (1893-1979) studied philosophy at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He taught his first literary class at Magdalene. After working with C. K Ogen, he began studying interpretation, and after seeing his students’ interpretations of poems, he wrote Practical Criticism and Principles of Literary Criticism. Once he started teaching at Harvard University, he argued that it is useless to have theory without application.
