Roland Barthes (1915 - 1980) was a French rhetor, semiotician, and literary critic, famed for his essay The Death of the Author.

The Death of the Author

Barthes published "The Death of the Author," probably his most famous work, in 1967. In it, he explains that the author and creator of a text are not the same, and that the creator of a text should never take precedence over the text itself.
