Roland Barthes (1915-1980) was a French philosopher, literary theorist and critic. He taught in France, Romania and Egypt while he wrote Writing Degree Zero. In 1952, he started at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique to study sociology and lexicology. After writing numerous well-known essays, Barthes began traveling to lecture.
