Ernest Bormann (1925-2008) is a communications scholar, most noted for authoring the Symbolic Convergence Theory of communication as well as Fantasy Theme Analysis. Both theories are intended as universal explanations of how human communities understand and make sense of human action.

Bormann was Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota Department of Speech-Communication. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1959.
